Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Critically read/review texts, paying attention to language, imagery, narrative technique, register, style, generic form and characterization
• Apply critical/theoretical terms and concepts to texts
• Work effectively as part of a team, whilst being self-directed and independent learners
• Prepare and deliver effective presentations and/or question and answer style topical interviews and discussions
• Interrogate the historical and ideological contexts in which literature is produced
• Participate in debates regarding the role of literature and other cultural forms in culture, politics, and society
• Write clearly-structured and effective responses to critical and cultural texts.
• Research effectively using a variety of sources
• Select and use appropriate media to present ideas and findings
Engagement with literary and creative practice will be incorporated into the module content, and seminars will combine close reading, directed study, individual research, group discussion and/or presentations.
Content information
The range of topics will cover from a variety of forms, genres, including poetry, non/fiction, drama and/or film. Lectures will provide (advanced) introductions to the formal and theoretical analysis of textual forms, and to the contexts in which they are produced, as well as critical thinking.
Participants will need to obtain copies of the semester set texts: confirmation of the titles will be given in the first lecture of the semester.
